Benzodiazepine prescriptions higher in older adults

In December 2014, the National Institute for Mental Health released a study showing that older adults are more likely to receive prescriptions for benzodiazepines (sedative and anti-anxiety medications), despite known risks to this population.

Nursing homes have a substantial opportunity to lead the healthcare industry in reducing misuse of benzodiazepines in elders—and as we work together to decrease anti-psychotic use, to continue promoting person-centered care as the standard to behavior management.
