Diabetes Self-Management Program Workshops

Learn how a DSMP workshop helped one woman better manage her diabetes.

Irene's Story

After a successful career that afforded me the excitement of traveling the globe, I was looking forward to doing my “heart’s work” of helping others during my retirement. It never occurred to me that I needed to help myself.

A close family member had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and I wanted to make sure I was in the clear. I was shocked that my doctor told me that my blood sugar was high and I had pre-diabetes. But looking back, I shouldn’t have been surprised.

My work schedule over 35 years made it difficult to make healthy food choices and to get enough physical activity. My family traditions of carb- and fat-heavy comfort food didn’t help matters. By the time I was diagnosed, an extra 20 pounds had snuck up on me.

One of the first things I did was enroll in the Diabetes Self-Management workshop. I attended all six sessions, got support from other participants, and realized that despite this diagnosis, I could be in charge and do everything I wanted to do in my retirement. Over the last year, I have controlled my blood sugar by eating more vegetables and fewer starchy and sweet foods and by getting daily exercise. I enjoy water fitness classes in my neighborhood and go to the dog park with my dog. I also have plenty of energy to volunteer four times a month serving the homeless and working at an emergency sanctuary for foster children.

The workshop put me on a different path. I have learned that I have limitations but ultimately I am responsible for my physical and spiritual well-being.
